Cheap way to travel from Tokyo to Osaka

Cheap way to travel from Tokyo to Osaka Tips

Hey friends did you ever want to go to Tokyo and Osaka, if not I’ll try to convince you that Tokyo and Osaka is a fun place to go to.

Have you ever dreamed of visiting the land of sushi, sumo, and high-tech gadgets? From cutting-edge technology to ancient temples and shrines. Japan has something for everyone. When you travel to Japan, I’m sure there are many people who have the opportunity to travel from Tokyo to Osaka. You want to keep your travel costs low and spend your money elsewhere, right?

Thus, in this article, I will explain to you how to travel from Tokyo to Osaka in a cheaply way.

HIghway bus

HIghway bus

For our first stop is the highway bus. Express buses are the cheapest way to get there. An express bus is a bus that connects towns and cities, mainly via expressways. Express buses come in two types: three-row seats and four-row seats. Also, there are four-row seats that are cheaper and the journey takes about eight hours. If you take the express bus on a weekday night, you can inevitably go from Tokyo to Osaka for 2200 yen or $19.83. A four-row seat has two seats on each side of the middle aisle.

If you ride alone, you will naturally have a stranger riding next to you. The area is divided so that, men and women do not line up. I once used an express bus with four rows of seats, but to be honest, it was too small for me to sleep. This is for people who just want to travel cheaply.

Train

Train

Next is the train, depending on how you use it, this is the cheapest way to travel. If you travel from Tokyo to Osaka by train, it takes about 9 hours and costs 9,000 yen ($81.13).

An 18 ticket is a free pass that allows unlimited rides on regular and rapid trains on JR lines throughout Japan and is priced at 12050 yen ($108.63), which is 2410 yen ($21.73) per day. This is definitely the cheapest way to travel not only from Tokyo to Osaka but also a short distance from there.

I have also used this to travel from Tokyo to Osaka, and I think it is more comfortable than the highway bus if you can avoid the crowded train times. It is also a great way to get off the bus and do some sightseeing.

On the other side, the disadvantage is that the sales period is limited to spring, summer, and winter. Furthermore, as I will explain in the Shinkansen section, there are many free passes available only for foreigners visiting Japan, so if you want to go cheaply, I think it is a good idea to buy an 18 ticket.

Shinkansen

Shinkansen

The Tokaido Shinkansen is the most convenient way to travel between Tokyo and Osaka. It takes 2 hours and 30 minutes to get from Tokyo to Osaka. It is more expensive than buses and trains, but foreign visitors to Japan can use the “JAPAN RAIL PASS” to get a cheaper ride. The “JAPAN RAIL PASS” is a free pass that allows unlimited rides on JR trains, limited express trains, and the Shinkansen. A 7-day free pass can be purchased from overseas for 29,650 yen ($266.48).

JAPAN RAIL PASS

The “Hokuriku Arch Pass” is also available for as low as 24,500 yen($220.86) from overseas.

However, the Hokuriku Shinkansen is not yet open to Osaka, so you will need to take the Shinkansen to Kanazawa and then the express train to Osaka, which will take 5 hours to arrive. This is a very good free pass for those who want to go sightseeing in Hokuriku.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen is scheduled to open from Tokyo to Osaka in 2023, so I hope that this free pass will be available again around that time.

LCC (Low Cost Carrier, Budget airline)

LCC (Low Cost Carrier, Budget airline)

Lastly the LCC. You can also fly cheaply by using low-cost airlines.

There are two airlines which is the Jetstar Japan and Peach Aviation that literally serve the Narita Airport in Tokyo and Kansai Airport in Osaka. If you book early, the lowest price is about 4,000 yen, including fees. The market price is about 8,000 yen.

However, the money for access between Tokyo and Narita Airport and Osaka City and Kansai Airport is expensive. It costs about 1,000 yen each.

Also, LCCs sometimes do not operate at convenient times. In many cases, you cannot cancel your ticket if you do not want to take the flight, so it is not very easy to use. If you are going to a place close to Narita or Kansai airport, it may be convenient.
